The indispensability of motherhood

Today is Mother’s day. A day set aside to honour mothers and celebrate motherhood for their contributions to humanity. Mothers are role models, caretakers, great managers, superheroes and nurturers. The importance of motherhood cannot be over empahasized even as it has lately been under siege.

The roles of motherhood are dependent on family and culture. However every mother wants the best for her children. The most common responsibilities of motherhood is to ensure that her children get the best of love, comfort and safety. Mothers sacrifice a lot to make sure her children have food on the table, a roof over their head and are properly cared for.

Motherhood is the most challenging and rewarding of all occupations. Starting from the time of conception  to the time the child or the mother dies. It could be a full-time job for some and part-time job for those who can afford nannies, babysitters and relatives who are willing to help them out. These helps are terrific but the truth is that nannies, babysitters and relatives cannot replace mothers. Mothers are most equipped to care, nurture, love and guide the children. Nannies cannot give the quality care that mothers give.

Mothers serve as stablisers in the family. Ffamily is incomplete without mothers. They   support and help children to take right decisions. They are of great influence on their children. They run the family and know their children better than any other person. They  greatly influence the life, character and behaviour of children

It takes commitment, sacrifice and hardwork to be a mother. She goes hungry so that her children can eat. She even gives up her job so that she could take care of her children. And gets nothing in return. Her only reward is to see her children at the end of the day happy and well. .

The celebrations of mothers and motherhood originated from the ancient festivals, such as the Christian Mothering Sunday. But the modern Mother’s Day has its origin in the US. It was initiated by Anna Jarvis in memorial of her mother in 1907. Her  campaigned to have mother’s day as a recognised holiday was successful in 1914 as, President Woodrow Wilson  proclaimed Mother's Day, a national holiday that was to be held each year on the second Sunday of May in the United states..

Mother’s Day is now celebrated in various countries around the world in March, April or May. Motherhood is the best thing to happen to mankind.

Thank you mothers for the sacrifices, pains, care, love and understanding you show us, your children. You are unique and strong.

The warmth, compassion, affection and love you give cannot be equalled. You are the best.

I salute you: all mothers and all mothers to be. I salute you.
