Charles
Taylor, the former President of Liberia and ex- war lord was
sentenced to 50 years in prison for his role in war crimes and crimes
against humanity committed during the civil war in Sierra leone in
the 1990s.
Richard
Lussick, the Judge presiding over the sentencing in an international
court for Sierra Leone at Hagues said that Mr Taylor had been found
guilty of „aiding and abetting, as well as planning, some of the
most heinous and brutal crimes recorded in human history”
The
judge said that the lengthy prison term is to reflect his position
when the crime was committed, adding that “Leadership must be
carried out by example by the prosecution of crimes, not the
commission of crimes,”
Taylor
was found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity in April.
He was accused of supplying Sierra Leone rebels with weapons and
received diamonds in return.
He is
the first head of state to be sentenced by an international court
since Nuremberg trials after World
War II.
Serves
him right. Good riddance to a very bad rubbish.
